Chiropractic
Chiropractic is a part of the healing arts that works on maintaining a healthy nervous system, especially the nerves that extend from the spine to all parts of the body. As part of the root cause of any disease, we have found that a healthy nervous system, one that is properly sending it's signals to the body, has to be in proper working order. Chiropractic does not address these issues with drugs or chemicals, it does so by locating and adjusting a musculoskeletal area of the body that is not functioning properly.
When you go to a chiropractor you will go through a standard exam to diagnose you condition and then a course of treatment will be agreed upon. Often X-rays will be taken and in some cases lab work will be performed. These X-rays are important as your chiropractor will be addressing the structure of your body, in particular the spine. I have been using chiropractic care for over 25 years and it has always been interesting to view my X-rays through the eyes of my chiropractors. They have noted issues and conditions that other medical specialists would not have seen.
Since your spine will be under evaluation let's talk about what it does. First, and most obvious, it holds the structure of your body together. It is a series of movable bones which start at the base of your skull and extend down to the center of your hips. Thirty-one pairs of spinal nerves extend down the spine from the brain and exit through a series of openings. The nerves leave the spine and form an electrical / chemical network that has an influence on every living tissue of your body. With this tremendous influence on your mind / body and spirit, it's not a stretch to suggest that having a chiropractor on your health team is a worthwhile investment.
Over the years I have had six car accidents, all rear-end collisions. Not having any knowledge of chiropractic after the first accident resulted in my living with a lot of neck and back pain. My medical doctors had me on all kinds of pain and anti-spazm drugs but after a short period of time they were useless. A very wise and dear friend suggested I go see a chiropractor. After my first visit and adjustments, I could hardly believe the relief that I had. For the first time after the accident I was pain-free! My first chiropractor had been in practice for over 30 years, was licensed in all 50 states, was an accomplished author, was trained in acupuncture when he lived in China and had a wealth of knowledge when it came to herbs and supplements. Needless to say, after every accident, slip, fall and virtually every injury I had after that, a trip to my chiropractor was, and still is, on the top of my wellness list.
My family and I have found that regular chiropractic care, once or twice a month, has been a valuable puzzle piece in our maintaining our health. Getting adjusted on a regular basis will boost your bodies inate ability to maintain balance. This innate intelligence will be the subject of another article but understand that when your bodies structure is correct, you are well on your way to staying healthy!
